The good news for many businesses is that they will be able to keep their current 717 area code phone number. The bad news is that eventually they will need to dial 10 digits to make local calls.

On Thursday (10/27/16), the Public Utility Commission’s made an unanimous decision to adopt an overlay area code for the 16 central Pennsylvania counties whose phone numbers start with 717. The PUC projects that by the third quarter of 2017 the usable phone numbers with the 717 area code will be exhausted.

Of the two options (“split” and “overlay”) suggested, the overlay area code relief option was strongly supported by the business community and the telecommunications industry. This option is projected to provide telephone numbers to the region for approximately 67 years.

Timeline for notification and implementation:

      • 3 months before the remaining 717 numbers are depleted, notification will go out to customers regarding the 10-digit dialing switch
      • After notification is sent out, the overlay area code will be implemented over the following 9 months, with a transition to 10-digit dialing being introduced during this implementation period
      • The telecommunications industry must complete all of the necessary network preparations for the new overlay by Mar. 1, 2017
