Wireless Asset Tracking

Quickly locate anything from a patient in a hospital, to a forklift in a warehouse

Wireless asset tracking allows people and equipment to be found quickly, saving valuable time otherwise spent searching - or waiting - for them. Morefield Communications has partnered with Ekahau to offer wireless asset tracking tools that combine cutting edge technology with smart integration features.

 Ekahau Locator Tag

The technology tracks devices over an organization's existing wireless network. Devices that can be tracked include:

  • laptops
  • PDAs
  • handsets, and
  • the Ekahau locator tag (shown right).

The benefit of using the existing network is that no costly RF antennas or receivers are required.

Wireless asset tracking has been deployed in a variety of industries. However, hospitals and manufacturing organizations were the first to embrace it. A hospital may want to view the location of wheel chairs, while a manufacturer may want to know where a particular forklift is. New applications for this technology are constantly being found.

Devices are monitored in real time and shown on a building map which is accessible from any computer with secure password access (if connecting remotely, then a VPN connection is required).

What is a site survey?

A site survey helps organizations visualize their wireless network's coverage areas and data rates (see screen shot below). This gives guidance for optimizing the network. The end result is a report which describes the ideal positioning of access points, and the right channels for minimum interference. It is industry best-practice to undertake a site survey whenever deploying a wireless network or running wireless applications.
